EMPOWERING FAMILIES THROUGH THE DIAGNOSTIC JOURNEY

EMPOWER offers offer a 7 module series of workshops, “Empowering Families Through the Diagnostic Journey”. The workshops help families as they embark on the diagnostic journey to understand and cope with their child’s mental, emotional or behavioral disorder. Families will have an opportunity to participate through the use of role plays, interactive discussion, and sharing of what has worked in the past.

Our workshops are also offered to outside organizations, conferences and in schools. The two most requested are “After the Diagnosis” and “Building a Partnership with the Schools”.

WORKSHOP - Empowering Families Through the Diagnostic Journey

GETTING TO THE DIAGNOSIS
Discuss normal development, the process of discovering that something is different, and suggestions on what to ask doctors and psychologists. Specific diagnoses are not discussed. Helpful resources are given to participants to help track their child’s behavior.

AFTER THE DIAGNOSIS
Deals with the question, “our child has been diagnosed with a brain disorder, now what?” The various cycles of emotions are discussed and strategies for moving forward are developed.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Whether it’s listening to our child, communicating with the teachers or doctors, or talking to each other, effective communication is the key. Discusses barriers to communication and effective communication skills. Practice with role playing and various fun exercises.

CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
Whether it’s listening to our child, communicating with the teachers or doctors, or talking to each other, effective communication is the key. This workshop discusses barriers to communication and effective communication. We will practice with role plays and various fun exercises.

Collaborative Problem Solving

Based on Ross Greene’s book, “The Explosive Child” we discuss strategies of problem solving with the child and others involved in the child’s life. Time is spent on discussion of the development of the brain and how that affects our actions and child’s actions. Come and find out what happens to your own IQ when involved in a heated discussion with your child.

Strategies are presented on ways to help the child cope with their environment and various issues that are hard for them to handle.

BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOLS

This module deals with building a partnership with the school so that parents and schools are working together in the education of the child. It discusses ideas on how to approach the school, how to communicate the child’s needs, and other ideas.

STEPPING FORWARD
This module helps the caregivers get some perspective on how the child’s illness has taken a toll on the caregiver. Hints are given to caregivers on how to take care of you. This module discusses how taking care of oneself is part of the diagnostic journey for the family.
