EDUCATION

We offer a a 7-module series of workshops "Empowering Families Through the Diagnostic Journey". The workshops help families as they embark on the diagnostic journey to understand and cope with their child’s mental, emotional or behavioral disorder. Families will have an opportunity to participate through the use of role plays and interactive discussion.

Our workshops are also offered to outside organizations, conferences and in the schools. The two most requested are "After the Diagnosis" and "Building a Partnership with the Schools".

WORKSHOP - Empowering Families Through the Diagnostic Journey

SOMETHING’S DIFFERENT – GETTING TO THE DIAGNOSIS
This will discuss normal development, discovering that something is different, and questions to ask doctors and psychologists.

AFTER THE DIAGNOSIS
This workshop deals with the question, "Our child has been diagnosed with a brain disorder, now what?" The various cycles of emotions are discussed and strategies for moving forward are developed.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Whether it’s listening to our child, communicating with the teachers or doctors, or talking to each other effective communication is the key. This workshop we will discuss barriers to communication and effective communication skills. We will practice with role plays and various fun exercises.

CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
Our children have different types of problems and that takes different types of solutions. Come brainstorm some effective ways to solve these problems.

BUILDING A PARTNERSHIP WITH SCHOOLS
This deals with building a partnership with the schools so that parents and schools are working together in the education of the child. It discusses ideas on how to approach the school, communicating the child’s needs, and other ideas.

NAVIGATING THE SYSTEMS
Guest speakers will be presenting on topics such as social security, Medicaid, and possible RTC.

STEPPING FORWARD
This workshop will discuss the "what’s next" step. Taking care of the caregiver is an important part of the diagnostic journey. How do we do this and advocate for our child?
